Academic Program Hendersonville Christian School sets high academic goals for its students. We believe that, as a Christian school, it is our responsibility to facilitate the development of our students' minds to their fullest potential. The HCS program is committed to being:
After graduation, HCS alumni have gone on to obtain their degrees at a number of different universities, including Appalachian State, Bob Jones, Bryan College, Covenant College, East Carolina, Erskine, Furman, North Carolina State, North Greenville, Pensacola Christian, UNCA, and UNC Chapel Hill. In 2008, one of our graduates was valedictorian of her college at NC State University. Some of our alumni are currently working on their doctorates or teaching at the collegiate level. Others are businessmen and women, pastors or missionaries, and community leaders. Hendersonville Christian School endeavors to prepare its students for the challenges of life after high school, whatever avenue they choose to pursue. HCS is divided into a lower school (K - 5) and an upper school (6 - 12). Our program fulfills the course and credit requirements of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. A short summary of the academic program for lower and upper schools is as follows: Lower School The lower school program focuses on developing foundational skills in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, information technology, and Bible. Memorization and repetition are used to reinforce the information that will become the basis for more advanced thinking in the upper school. In addition, chorus is offered at every grade level, and band is available to students in 4th and 5th grades. Students attend physical education classes three times a week and computer class once a week. The core curriculum includes A Beka, Saxon Math, and BJU Press. Upper School The upper school program consists of a middle school (6 - 8) and a high school (9 - 12). The middle school classes are designed to add the advanced cognitive skills of formal logical operations and analysis to the concrete cognitive skills students have acquired in the lower school, thus preparing them for the rigors of high school. All high school classes are taught on a college preparatory (CP) track. For those students who desire to take their education to a higher level, HCS also offers honors courses, as well as advanced placement (AP) courses as needed. Dual enrollment with Blue Ridge Community College is also available. While the state of North Carolina requires 24 credits for graduation, Hendersonville Christian School requires 26 credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Students may also qualify as North Carolina Academic Scholars by fulfilling that program's requirements (see their website at www.iss.k12.nc.us/ncscholars.htm). |
